He came from [[Lich Halt]], where he served as one of only twenty guards protecting the hamlet. The more he tells us about Lich Halt, the more I understand why some of his ideas sound perfectly reasonable to him and completely insane to everyone else. - When I first met him, Constantine had mismatched equipment, almost no money, and enough nervous energy to make it obvious he was trying very hard to look more prepared than he actually was. I later learned he arrived with two copper pieces to his name. We have not allowed him to forget this. - Lich Halt being apparently just as poor has not helped him. Constantine has described a place where even ordinary drinking water is enough of a problem that they ferment what they can or turn things into cider instead. At this point, any discussion involving money, food, water, or basic amenities tends to become an opportunity to ask whether Lich Halt has discovered them yet. - Constantine is also only twenty. This becomes especially entertaining whenever we reach somewhere that refuses to serve him alcohol. He insists things work differently back home. The rest of us generally respond by reminding him that we are not currently in the impoverished forest hamlet where "questionable cider" counts as hydration. - He is exhausting. There is really no cleaner way to put it. If there is a suspicious tunnel, unnecessary challenge, questionable plan, or opportunity to make a manageable situation considerably more complicated, Constantine has an impressive ability to eventually become involved. - In Seagrove Cavern he wandered away from us and started a fight that ended with both [[Drougma Tarak]] and me unconscious. Constantine then had to drag us back to safety himself. One might assume nearly getting half the group killed would discourage him from wandering into caves alone. One would be giving Constantine too much credit. - While Greenest was rebuilding, Constantine suggested arming the local children. [[Marcel Voltaire]] had to go around making sure nobody actually followed through with the idea. I am still impressed that "do not arm the children" needed to become part of our group's decision-making process. - Constantine has also managed the unusual accomplishment of being knocked unconscious by essentially every one of us at some point. Marcel put him down during the duel he insisted on starting behind an inn in Greenest. - Shortly before we reached [[Baldur’s Gate]], I had to put him down myself aboard the boat. He had been causing enough turmoil within the group that I was not willing to let him jeopardize what we were trying to accomplish right before arriving. - Earlier on the road toward [[Waterdeep]], Constantine angered [[Drougma Tarak]] badly enough that the two of them ended up dueling. Drougma won and knocked Constantine unconscious. - Later, [[Kalis Mikhailson]] had his own duel with Constantine after being provoked. Kalis used his wings to stay in the air and pelt Constantine from above, which the rest of us agreed was not exactly honorable, but it was still effective. Kalis won, and Constantine was knocked unconscious again... - At this point, being rendered unconscious by another member of the [[Yang Gang]] is less an incident in Constantine's life and more a tradition. - For a short time on Stormwreck Isle, Constantine drove our wagon. I have handled the reins since. I would genuinely rather die again than spend several hundred miles wondering which pothole Constantine intends to use to finish the job. - Despite all of that, Constantine has genuinely come through for us. On Stormwreck Isle, he landed a perfect shot on a kobold moments before it could drop a boulder onto Marcel, giving me enough time to stop the rest of the encounter from becoming worse. - He wants badly to become stronger. That is probably the most consistent thing about him. He gets embarrassed, beaten, frightened, proven wrong, and occasionally rendered unconscious by his own companions, then eventually gets back up and tries again. - The more I have learned about his life, the harder it has become to stay angry with him for very long. His mother is dead, I know almost nothing about his father, and [[Lord Aeric]], the man Constantine serves and practically worships, was taken by the [[Cult of the Dragon]]. - Despite all of that, he speaks fondly of the people back home. [[Wuf]] was one of his fellow guards and someone he considered a friend. [[Yohan]] seems to have been something closer to an uncle or mentor, traveling between Lich Halt and the outside world, teaching Constantine Dwarvish and providing much of what he knew about places beyond the woods. - Then there is [[Constatius]], or "Shadowtine", as everyone except Constantine now calls him. Constantine originally complained about shadows following him until one of them eventually stepped out looking exactly like him. - Shadowtine is calmer, more confident, considerably better spoken, and seems to understand whatever is happening to Constantine far better than Constantine himself does. He has identified himself as a servant of [[Mask]], can appear separately from Constantine, and has even taken control of Constantine directly. - I think Constantine may be cursed. Or this could be [[Mask]] changing him. Or Shadowtine is responsible. Or Constantine has somehow managed to involve himself in something even stranger than any of those possibilities. I genuinely do not know anymore. - What I do know is that Constantine himself seems to understand even less than I do. Watching someone change that much in only a few months would be concerning even if that person were not already Constantine. - That is part of why I do not really see him as a threat so much as someone caught in the middle of something he barely understands. If he ever seriously tried to stand in my way, I am confident I could handle him. We have already crossed that line once before. - What worries me more is the possibility that one day we will actually need Constantine to make the right decision under pressure, and whatever is happening to him, or whatever usually happens inside his head, gets there first. - Still, most of his mistakes come from trying to help rather than refusing to act. He wants to be stronger, useful, and someone the rest of us can depend on. Considering everything being piled onto him, I have to give him credit for still trying. - I give Constantine a lot of shit because he makes it incredibly easy. But I do want him to succeed. For all the strange changes, terrible ideas, and headaches he causes me, I would rather see him become the person he is trying so hard to be than let whatever is happening to him decide that for him.
