From what I understand, it is not exactly magic itself, but something used to reach and control magical power. - The Weave is closely tied to [[Mystra]], the goddess of magic. I have heard that when something happens to her, the effects can reach far beyond her followers and interfere with magic itself. - [[The Spellplague]] is probably the clearest example I know of what can happen when the Weave fails.
