Growing up in [[Silvercross]] with both of my parents tied so closely to the Order, Vaela was never simply some distant commander whose name I occasionally heard. - Before becoming commander, Vaela served among the Order herself and trained alongside people such as [[Olivia Halcrest]] and [[Therona Eldwynair]]. She was also taught by [[Saelar Quinnlight]], whose ideas about Tymora and fortune clearly left their mark on the way she leads. - Vaela has always treated faith in [[Tymora]] as something that requires action. One of the lessons I associate with her is that luck does not excuse hesitation; eventually a person still has to choose a direction and move. - As commander, she works closely with people whose personalities and methods could easily pull the Order in different directions, including my mother. Somehow she has always managed to keep those differences pointed toward the same purpose. - I remember the Order changing after what happened in 1486. Olivia was gone, and I was hardly in a position then to understand everything happening around me, but nobody in the Coinhall came away untouched by it. - Vaela has always struck me as someone who understands that command means being responsible for what happens to everyone beneath it, not merely being the person permitted to give orders. Whether that burden weighs on her as much as I suspect is something I have never asked.
