He was a paladin of [[Tymora]] and once served as Captain of the Vanguard within the [[Order of the Lucky Blades]], long before I was old enough to understand what any of those titles actually meant. - He fought alongside my mother, [[Therona Eldwynair]], and [[Olivia Halcrest]] for years. The three of them had already shared more battles and history than I could properly appreciate by the time I came along. - An injury eventually forced dad away from active service. He stepped down from the Vanguard rather than trying to pretend he could continue doing the same work forever, and [[Thorrin Embergaunt]] would eventually take his old position. - Retirement for him apparently meant opening [[The Silver Flagon]] in [[Silvercross]], which still placed him behind a counter listening to armed strangers tell questionable stories all day. I suppose some habits survived the change in profession. - I grew up above that tavern. Dad was behind the bar, my mother was usually somewhere connected to the Order, and Olivia was around often enough that I never really thought of her as a visitor. That was simply what home looked like. - He was always been easier for me to talk to than my mother. He can still tell me when I am being an idiot, but he has the courtesy to make it sound like there might still be hope afterward. - A lot of what I understood about being a paladin came from watching him before I ever swore an oath myself. Duty mattered to him, but so did the people underneath all the armor and ceremony. I think that distinction mattered more to me than I realized at the time. - [[Olivia Halcrest]]'s death changed all of us. I know what it did to me, and I know what it did to my mother, but dad had lost someone who had been part of his life long before she ever became my mentor. I was too buried in my own grief to understand much of anyone else's back then. - My relationship with the [[Order of the Lucky Blades]], [[Tymora]], and the oath I once carried has become considerably more complicated since. I know he has not stopped being my dad because of any of it... which matters more than I know how to write properly. - I have lived under other names, died in places my family has never seen, and spent years trying to put distance between myself and the person I used to be. There are still times when I think of home and the first thing that comes to mind is that he's behind the bar at the Flagon.
