The three of us trained together long enough that, for most of my early life, I thought of Kaelen less as another member of the Order and more as family. - Kaelen was always the disciplined one. Where I trusted instinct and Lira usually trusted people, Kaelen trusted preparation, structure, and the belief that if something mattered enough, you did not leave the outcome to chance. We made each other better because of that. He forced me to think before acting, I forced him to occasionally act before thinking himself into a wall, and Lira somehow survived being caught between both of us. - [[Olivia Halcrest]]'s death broke something between us that never really healed. Kaelen knew I had struck the killing blow. Whatever explanation existed behind that fact, whatever [[Beshaba]] had done to Olivia, there were lives where the fact that I was still standing afterward became more important to him than anything else. - I feel that it's important to note that has killed me before. Outside [[Amphail]], he hunted me down and put an end to one of my lives himself. In another, the two of us fought until neither of us could walk away. - I learned eventually that, in at least one life, Kaelen discovered the truth about my curse. I had hoped knowing that Beshaba was behind what happened to Olivia might change something between us. Instead, it gave him another reason to believe that something was fundamentally wrong with me. - I think to Kaelen, I had become a contradiction of some sort. Someone who should have died and did not stay dead. Once he reached that conclusion, killing me stopped being revenge in his mind and became something closer to correcting a "mistake". - The worst version of Kaelen I encountered was at the [[Hollow Cloister]]. By then he had fallen far enough that the man I remembered from Silvercross was almost impossible to see beneath what remained. He had aligned himself with [[Beshaba]], surrounded himself with [[Doommaster]]s and [[Wormluck]]s, and turned all of that discipline he once used to protect people toward something much uglier. - That Kaelen... eventually died as well. Like everything else tied to this curse, death did not mean my story stayed finished. - The Kaelen that is alive now is not exactly the man I faced at the Hollow Cloister. That is something I have to remind myself of. He is still a paladin of the Order, still tied to [[Tymora]], and as far as I know he believes I am dead. - Luckily, this go around has kept it that way. For once, Kaelen must be living in a world where [[Dio Eldwynair]] is no longer his problem, and I have no intention of correcting him until I have a very good reason. - I don't know whether Kaelen is destined to become what I have seen before. That may be the worst part. Every life changes things slightly, and I have seen enough versions of him to know that the man he becomes is not inevitable. - I still remember the Kaelen who trained beside me. The one who argued with me, pushed me harder, trusted Lira, respected my mother; the man that was my friend... - If he learned I was alive, I honestly do not know which Kaelen would come looking for me, friend or foe. Part of me still wants to believe I would get my friend back; however, experience has taught me to keep ready for the alternative.
