They enforce order in the city not out of duty alone, but because order pays. Where coin flows, the Fist follows. They are disciplined, organized, and expensive, the kind of force you hire when you want problems solved quickly and without debate. Soldiers, officers, and hardened veterans make up their ranks, many drawn from across the Realms with little in common beyond steel, training, and a shared understanding that loyalty lasts as long as the contract does. Despite their mercenary roots, the Flaming Fist has become something more permanent in Baldur’s Gate. They guard its walls, patrol its streets, and answer, at least in theory, to those in power above them. In practice, the line between authority and enforcement is often blurred. If the [[Council of Four]] rule the city, the Flaming Fist makes sure that rule is respected. Whether that respect is earned or forced is rarely a question anyone sticks around long enough to answer. - In one life, [[Dio Eldwynair]] tested that order and found its edge. During the [[Festival of the Moon]] in [[Baldur’s Gate]], he struck down a priest of the [[Church of Beshaba]] in the open street, an act of impulse dressed as justice. The Fist responded within moments, overwhelming him without ceremony or hesitation. He did not resist and by dawn, they executed him beside the same shrine where the blood had first been spilled, the city already moving on as if nothing of value had been lost.
