The two have known each other long enough that Edwin is familiar with both Dorian's habits and the excuses required when those habits become inconvenient. - Edwin has very little interest in leaving Candlekeep himself. He prefers books, artifacts, good lighting, and a desk that is unlikely to suddenly become involved in a sword fight, leaving the actual traveling to Dorian. - More than once, Edwin has helped cover for Dorian's so-called research trips, providing explanations and paperwork convincing enough to keep [[The Avowed]] from looking too closely at where he has actually gone. - Whether Edwin knows exactly what Dorian gets himself involved in is difficult to say. He almost certainly knows the trips are not as harmless as Dorian pretends, but part of their friendship seems to rest on Edwin knowing when not to ask.
