<div class="dioctionary-ribbon">A Brief History</div>
- Vael'Thir was [[Olivia Halcrest]]'s longsword, forged in the 1140s by a distant ancestor of House Halcrest. The blade is made from mithral and gold alloy and had already belonged to her family for centuries before it ever became hers. She never seemed to treat it like an ordinary weapon. It was an inheritance, and one of the few things she carried that connected her directly to the family she came from.
- The gold-worked guard carries an old Elvish inscription worn down by centuries of use. I know it meant something to Olivia's family, though I never learned enough of that history to pretend I understood all of it. The velvet-green grip was added later and fitted specifically to Olivia's hand, while the pommel ends in a small golden flower.
- Along the hilt is a tiny carving of a robed woman with her hands folded in blessing. Olivia told me it represented the matron who founded her family line. Whether every part of that story survived the centuries exactly as it happened, I have no idea. It mattered to her, which was enough for me.
- I carry Vael'Thir now, though I rarely draw it. There is something about wrapping my hand around the same grip she used that makes the distance between then and now disappear a little too quickly. I keep it for much the same reason I still wear her hat. Some things are too important to leave behind simply because the person they belonged to is gone.
