Or it was. It sits along a bend of the [[Immerflow River]] in [[Cormyr]], large enough that travelers have reasons to stop and small enough that growing up there meant eventually knowing nearly everyone worth knowing, along with several people you would have preferred not to. - The town grew around the [[Order of the Lucky Blades]], whose history reaches back farther than Silvercross itself. The stories I grew up with all began with the Five of Fortune, the founding of the Order, and [[Wa'Gera]] being sealed beneath the hill where [[The Crimson Coinhall]] now stands. - The Coinhall was never technically the center of Silvercross, but growing up in the Order made it feel that way to me. [[Vaela Sunsong]], [[Saelar Quinnlight]], my mother [[Therona Eldwynair]], [[Kaelen Droswynn]], [[Lira Morningvale]], and later [[Olivia Halcrest]] were all tied to that place. I trained at [[The Openfield Grounds]], learned my oath beneath its roof, and spent enough of my childhood wandering its halls that I probably knew some of its corridors better than my own bedroom. - My actual home was [[The Silver Flagon]], where my father [[Rowan Eldwynair]] kept the doors open and half the town supplied with somewhere to tell stories. [[The Copper Lantern]] offered the quieter alternative, while the rest of Silvercross carried on around us: [[Hammer & Hide]] ringing through the morning, [[Hearthsprout Bakery]] making the streets smell unfairly good before sunrise, [[The Riverturn Mill]] turning along the water, and shops like [[Greenwhistle Remedies]], [[Sharpwind Arms]], and [[The Wayfarer’s Pack]] handling all the ordinary things that kept the town alive. - I think something to point out here about the town, is that Silvercross was never ruled by the Order, despite how easy that mistake would be for an outsider to make. [[Mira Thornwell]] has kept that distinction intact from [[Stoneward Hall]] for longer than I have been alive. The Order protects the town. It does not own it. Mira was always very good at reminding armed paladins of that without needing to raise her voice. - Faith in [[Tymora]] is everywhere in Silvercross without always needing to announce itself. Coins collect in the fountain where Highstone Way and Oathmarch Road meet, festivals fill the square, and the idea that fortune favors those willing to take the first step is woven into almost everything. That is where the name "Town of the Bold Step" comes from. - For all the places I have lived since, Silvercross remains the standard I compare them against. Not because it was perfect.
