<div class="dioctionary-ribbon">A Brief History</div>
- [[Kalis Mikhailson]] was one of the original six of us brought together by [[Yang Pahlavan]] before [[Stormwreck Isle]]. He already knew [[Traxis]] somehow, though neither of them ever gave me enough of an explanation to understand what their history actually was.
- When I first met Kalis, I took him for a particularly secretive rogue. Hood, mask, knives, good at disappearing, and generally more comfortable letting everyone else speak first. Then wings came out of his back during our fight with [[Sparkrender]], so my understanding of him required some adjustment.
- His past still arrives in pieces. I know there were expectations from his parents, some connection to a woman named [[Lucia]], and involvement with a thieves' guild at some point. Kalis rarely gives enough detail for the pieces to connect. Trying to learn his history is like assembling a book from pages he occasionally throws at you.
- He is also very careful with money. Considering he will happily hold onto coin until there is a reason to spend it, I get the impression that having enough to feel secure matters to him more than he usually admits.
- In [[Greenest]], Kalis proved how capable he actually is when he needs to be. He helped us move through the Cult's camp without immediately bringing everyone down on our heads, and later faced [[Langdedrosa Cyanwrath]] alone. He won and still chose to spare them.
- The woman from the cult we suspect may have been the [[White Wyrmspeaker]] also took a particular interest in him. She spoke with Kalis privately for quite some time and then allowed him to leave safely. He came back uneasy and has never given me anything resembling the full story of what was said.
- Kalis also has changed considerably since Stormwreck. The rogue is still there, but most of the power I see from him now comes through his devotion to [[The Raven Queen]]. He has become far more comfortable calling on death itself as a weapon.
- From a distance I've seen him bring that power down on someone with the sound of a funeral bell, and when something gets close I've seen him summon forth an enormous scythe that hangs beside him and cuts into whatever is unfortunate enough to be standing there.
- There is something fitting about Kalis ending up as a follower of the Raven Queen. He has always carried himself like someone with one foot in whatever came before us and the other already looking toward whatever comes next.
- That faith also makes him one of the people in this group I watch carefully when it comes to my predicament. I keep dying and returning when I should not, and Kalis now serves a goddess tied to death and what remains after it. If anyone traveling with us eventually learns something useful about what is happening to me, he may be one of the better chances I have.
- The other side of that is obvious. If the Raven Queen ever decided that what Beshaba has done to me violates something that needs correcting, I have no idea whether "correcting" it would mean freeing me or making sure I finally stay dead.
- So for now, I must consider Kalis as "dangerous". Not an enemy, and not someone I currently distrust, but dangerous. He knows how I fight, his magic is becoming stronger, and unlike most people who could threaten me, he has spent months watching exactly what works against me.
- If I ever had to fight him seriously, I would want the distance closed before he had time to make the battlefield his. Letting Kalis stand comfortably away from me while deathly magic and that damned scythe do the work would be a spectacularly poor plan.
- Despite all the secrets and mystery surrounding him, Kalis has stayed with us. He has fought beside us when leaving would have been easier, taken risks for people he barely knew, and shown mercy when killing someone would have been simpler. I may not entirely understand him, but at this point I consider him one of us.
